Clinton's Outburst

I don't have much to say about Clinton's outburst on Fox News. Others have covered in far more detail how many lies and omissions were in Clinton's short interview, as well as the kind of political machinations that Clinton is so prone to. But there is something that I haven't seen: a look at what Clinton's outburst reveals — or rather, how it reinforces what we already know — about his character.

Bill Clinton (and yes, Hillary, too) is what Southerners call "white trash." He is not much more than the trailer park slut who gets pregnant at 15, or the poor guy who beats his wife because he can't ever manage to get ahead (or to care enough to change his own self-destructive behaviors), or the fat old slob bemoaning that the world finds them unattractive. Clinton has managed to cover it well, most of the time, because he is very charismatic and very intelligent. Which just goes to show that you can be intelligent and a great fool. Clinton is a great fool, on many levels. Clinton is also amoral, and a habitual liar. Worse yet, he is the kind of habitual liar who blames all of his failures on the machinations of others, and accepts no responsibility for his own behavior.

Bill Clinton is the only argument that I have ever seen in favor of term limits that have made me think there might be a point to that position, after all. My great fear is that enough people have managed to bury his and Hillary's lack of character in their disused memories, and that that forgetfulness will allow Hillary to become President. The gods forbid such a pestilence on our great nation.

If I sound disgusted, it's because I am.

I won't forget. And I can't (in polite company, anyway) say what I think of Hillary.

But what worries me is that in addition to those who forget about the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" comment or Hillary-care, there will be a whole group of eligible voters in 2008 who have no meaningful memories of the Clinton administration. Those who will be 18 in 2008 were only 10 in 2000, Clinton's last year in office. Heck, the 21-year-olds were only 13.

Let's hope someone out there has a tape with the real Hillary that they've been saving for just the right time. Or perhaps we'll get lucky and she'll get near an open mike and her true character will be revealed.

"...only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me!"

Apparently Clinton was reaching for the whine.

I disagree; Hillary's not trash. (Bill, definitely.) She's the suburban upper-middle that he married up INTO. She may have picked up some coloration and habits over the years, but they're just for outward show.
She may be dangerous for a number of reasons, but her character flaws aren't due to class, or lack of.

I'm not too worried. Hillary prospers wherever there is spiteful animus taking place between the ladies and gentlemen. When she was popular, her husband was President and there was a considerable gender gap in his approval. Men who thought well of him, were in something of a minority; at times, the female who disliked his administration, was downright freakish.

Things are better now. I'm noticing in popular culture, there are some products that are built to please only women, or only men, alienating whatever gender is outside of the intended appeal. Those products are waning in popularity or disappearing altogether. Ten years ago, it seems, that was the way things were done. Things built for women, were advertised, subtly, as something a man would NOT like. And vice-versa. Books, movies, new television shows. Nowadays when you sell something, it seems you include something in the pitch to appeal to both sexes, or else you're dead. The gender gap has been replaced by a generational gap.

I think that's healthy, it shows men and women actually like each other now. Hillary has seen this too, with her occasional support for the GWoT which has caused no small amount of friction with her base. But whether she likes it or not, she simply isn't a product for a co-ed audience. Still, as you point out, a "voter" who was 10 in 2000 will be able to actually participate, so time will be the final arbiter of success as she re-packages herself.

My prediction though, is she'd better share a home with her husband, be seen doing it, and look happy living with him. Or else forget it. Women who actually enjoy the company of men, have become deeply suspicious of women who go through life nursing childish resentments toward men. The first of those two have been placed under the control of the second of those two, for decades, I think they know it, and they're determined not to let it happen again. You can hear it in Hillary's voice. She used to talk with this hostile, nasal resonance, almost like a duck. That's mostly gone now. Her audience has changed, and she knows it.
