Narnia

I saw Narnia tonight. It was excellent. Pretty much perfect, in fact, to the books. I agree with every word Brian Tiemann wrote.

I, too, was blown away by the movie. I have been trying very hard not to use the word "perfect" to describe it, but it seems uncharitable to do so (especially now that my biggest complaint of changing the name of Fenris Ulf turns out to have been a change back to the original). Ok, Aslan could have been a bit bigger and more impressive and had a stronger voice than Liam Neeson's. Of course, James Earl Jones can only do so many lions' voices.

Tilda Swinton was dead-on as the White Witch; I can't think of anything negative to say about her performance. Mr. Tumnus was played quite well, especially the initial scenes with Lucy. Peter and Susan were played very well, matching their characters in the book. But the star, by far, was Georgie Henley as Lucy. I can't say enough about her performance; it was beyond magnificent. Every line was delivered with the right tone, cadence, and emotion. Every facial expression was exactly right for the moment. I doubt there could have been a better Lucy; it was truly an amazing performance.

If perfect isn't the word, "perfect" has no meaning. I agree on Georgie Henley's performance: I have never seen such a convincing performance and dead-on character rendition by any child, and few adults. And while I think Liam Neeson wasn't the best choice for Aslan's voice, I can't say who (other than James Earl Jones) would have been better, except maybe Jason Robards (but isn't head dead?). The main problem with Neeson is he is so young: you need an old, experienced but vibrant man's voice for Aslan.

But even there, I had forgotten Neeson was doing the voice: it was distinctive, but not enough to make me think of Aslan as Neeson.

I was very impressed with Tumnus and with Edmund as well, and Peter and Susan were both right. The character I found most interesting that I least expected to was the Dwarf that served Jadis: he was really, really a powerful character, corrupt and venal and curiously fatalistic, while maintaining the edge of fright that touches those who are truly playing at the edges of evil.

The voice of Maugrim was perfect, and I suspect I have only read the British version, because I always remember Maugrim, and had to look up who Fenris Ulf was.

Narnia was excellent; no reservations at all.
