Borderlines
Curzon at coming anarchy is doing an interesting series on buffer states, so far including the China-India border, Afghanistan and Switzerland. Well worth reading.
UPDATE: Two more are up, completing the series: Thailand and Mongolia. Hmmm...shouldn't there be more, for say Namibia and Western Sahara?

Yeah -- this series could go on forever. But these five cases tell the most about the idea, I think.
