Liberty and responsibility are closely linked and interdependent. Those who would deprive us of our liberty find it a difficult task when attempted simply and directly. But when they generously relieve us of our responsibilities, which most of us relinquish readily, our liberties are destroyed, ever more rapidly, almost automatically.
