The End of the World

Woty Freeman has a really good post in this week's Carnival of the Vanities, talking about how 9/11 changed international relations, and asking the important question, of whether we should grant the demands of the radical Islamists. After all, he notes, the demands are rather scary:

  • Accept Islam as the one true faith
  • Stop ‘fornication, homosexuality, intoxicants, gambling's, and trading with interest'
  • Accept that the Muslims are entitled to take over all of Israel because they are the ‘inheritors of the true Torah'.
  • Accept Islamic theocracy as the just form of government.
  • Accept the anti-semitic libel that Jews are a great evil that is controlling our society, government, media, and economy, and act to prevent their influence.
  • Prevent women from working
  • Abandon the entertainment industry
  • Sign the Kyoto treaty
  • Give up industry and business and capitalism
  • Ignore human rights abuses in Islamic countries

And yet, if we were to grant some of them (such as disfavoring Israel), would that be enough to satisfy the Islamists' rage against us? In other words, should we listen to the Islamists and give them what they want? And if not, then what should we do?

I would first have to say as a proud American the individuals who are in charge of this website didn't care one iota about the Unites States until the tragedy of 9/11. I know this because everyone I know and have known didn't. Second, as a Muslim I am subjected to anti-Islamic rhetoric daily since 9/11 and prior to it. As human beings we forget that we need to respect the differences that people have in this world. Whether it be race or religion. All the media has done is give the image that all Muslims want to do is "kill the infidels". This is not true. Look at the Muslims in the US, Canada, and Europe. If we were all evil terrorists wouldn't all of us be creating havoc all over the world? When you have power you have influence and that is what the media has. If people picked up a book about Islam instead of relying on the television for their education they would know that Islam is peace. The public only portrays the few. The few who use religion as a tool for justification of their evil deeds. Hence 9/11. Those individuals might have had Muslim names and backgrounds but their action of killing over 3000 innocent people is obvious proof that they were not acting like Muslims at all. Evil is what they were and Islam doesn't tolerate evil. People all over the world need to realize that there is no place on this planet that religion is practiced correctly as a whole. Those who adhere to their religion by obeying their faith unconditionally are few and are scattered throughout the world. Intelligent, caring people don't judge others: they reach out and try to understand differences. All I urge is that the inhabitants of this planet begin thinking for themselves and stop being puppets. I ask for forgiveness from any indivuals I might have offended and apologize if I did. I ask that ALLAH bring knowledge to your minds and peace to your hearts.

A foolish allegation. Unsupported and unsupportable.
I know this because everyone I know and have known didn't.

You need to get yourself a better class of friends, then. This comment is in line with the famous quote after Nixon won a landslide victory in 1972: "How could he have won? I don't know anyone who voted for him!"

Second, as a Muslim I am subjected to anti-Islamic rhetoric daily since 9/11 and prior to it. As human beings we forget that we need to respect the differences that people have in this world. It's unfortunate that you have been subjected to anti-Islamic rhetoric. Just as anti-Catholic, anti-Baptist and anti-Jewish rhetoric (and the underlying feelings) have at times been prevalent in the US, there is some anti-Muslim feeling now. While understandable, it's also unfortunate. However...

If people picked up a book about Islam instead of relying on the television for their education they would know that Islam is peace. The public only portrays the few. The few who use religion as a tool for justification of their evil deeds. Hence 9/11. There is no such monolithic entity as Islam. The Islamists - that is to say, those who have perverted Islam into a religion of mass slaughter - are the ones you should be saving your bile for. They are the visible ones, and all too often they go uncriticized by the silent majority of decent Muslims. Where is the equivalent Muslim criticism to the Western criticism of communism and fascism, our former demons?

Intelligent, caring people don't judge others: they reach out and try to understand differences.

Not true; judgement is what makes us human. How can we not judge those who slaughtered the Jews in WWII (and elsewhere), who slaughtered the Russian peasants, who slaughtered the Chinese peasants, who slaughtered the Tutsis, who drove planes into skyscrapers filled with people? Of course we must judge. Judgement does not preclude understanding. Those who do evil, or attempt to do evil, must be prevented. Right now, the biggest extant case of that which threatens the US is Islamist radicalism. (Though I think that the horrible conditions in N. Korea are being shamefully ignored by the West, they don't threaten us directly, either.)
