Why I Like Michigan

I miss Texas. I miss my friends. Y'all know I do. And I emphasize this with the "y'all."

But.

I love snow. I mean, I love snow. It makes me happy. It refreshes my spirit.

This is what the Cub Scouts did today. See this?

Sledding Hill

This is a sledding hill. And all those people on it are sledding. Or getting ready to sled. You get the gist.

Last time we went sledding, Lachlan was little. I had to carry him, and sled with him. This time, he never looked back:

A playground's a playground, whatever the weather:

(Since I homeschool, I feel obliged to point out that I did knit that hat.)

We brought a cake, and called it a birthday party for the two January birthday boys:

Honest, Aidan's making that face on purpose.

It hasn't snowed much yet - half an inch here, an inch there. We haven't been above freezing in a couple of weeks, though, so whatever small amounts we get stay. I'm still rooting for a good 4-6 inch fall.

Tigers and Webelos, Oh, My!

Our Blue and Gold Banquet was Sunday. It was wonderful. Aidan received his Tiger badge, and Connor his Webelos badge. I'll have pictures as soon as the site decides to cooperate.

Frankly, I have no idea how Connor got his Webelos. As much as I worried over the religious requirements ... I don't know when he did them. Or how. His den leader assures me he did all the requirements, but I never saw anything happening. It was a non-issue.

She must be one heck of a leader. I suppose the rest of the pack would protest if I packed her up and took her to Michigan?

Aidan's requirements I saw. Every bit of them. Including the last-minute field trip to the local paper to get that ONE last bead requirement in. That's much more like how I thought Scouting would be.

Frantic Field Trips

Tiger Cubs are supposed to go on five den field trips to earn their Tiger badge. The Blue and Gold banquet is in one month, and we've gone to ... well, no field trips.

So, in the next month, we get to fit in all the trips. You know, in between the Pinewood Derby, the birthday party, and everything else.

Today we went to the Log Cabin Village in Ft. Worth. Apparently all the reenactors and cool exhibits are only there on weekdays, so today we got to see ... log cabins. It was still a fun and interesting trip. I liked the schoolhouse best:

This little village is full of mostly original buildings, though with modern maintenance; for instance, where mud would have been slathered between the chinks, the restorers used cement.

It always gives one a nice bit of perspective to see these one-room houses where people raised nine kids, doesn't it?

Then we went to the Ft. Worth Arboretum, where the kids could swing from trees. 'Cause after a little culture and perspective, you just have to swing on trees.

First Scout Meeting

We had our first pack meeting on Tuesday. At the meeting I got:

* The list of the five million activities the Boy Scouts have planned

* The price list for the uniforms, and the instructions on how to take out a loan to buy them

* No idea of what to do next

I went up to the leaders after the meeting, and said "Hi, I have absolutely no idea which dens my kids are in, or when they meet, or what to do next."

They nodded and said "Yes, that's right."

Whee! I'm clueless and in the loop, all at the same time!

It will get better, right?
