Give it Away

Amy at Good Soil left this in my comments, but it deserves more notice:

Stephanie,

I’ve been stewing over the “tax rebates” for a while - are we really so greedy as a nation that during the biggest economic downturn in recent memory we’ll go buy new MP3 players? Do we really want to subsidize Walmart and China with our tax dollars? How much is this plan costing us over and above the amount the checks are being written for? Well, I’ve decided to act on my thoughts. I’ve started a new blog about the topic focusing on what I believe is the best response to the Economic Stimulus Plan – giving it away. Please visit and let me know what you think.

Pay down debt. First and foremost, put one's house in order (or try to). We don't need to go buy fancy stuff.

Pay down debt. *THAT'S* what's killing the American people right now -- our indebtedness.

We all should also salt away some amount of money in liquid form just to handle emergencies.

I agree with Geek. Pay down debt first. Since we've already done that, though, we were already planning to give ours away. My only comment about where to send it is to do it locally. I know the national charities get a lot of bang for the buck on bulk, but more and more I think helping out a local charity - where your neighbors are - is the best bet.

That's a neat site, though.

I agree, on both counts - paying off the debt first, and then giving locally.

Thanks for the publicity, Stephanie.

And thanks to Mark and Geek for their comments. I addressed the debt thing on the FAQ page, but you are not the only ones who have commented on that, so I'll be addressing it tomorrow on Give It Away. In a nutshell, I agree that consumer debt needs to be paid off!

As to the giving locally, that's something to think about and research. I'll have to address it on the blog a bit later after I try to find some facts and figures on it. At first thought, it does seem that the connection local giving would foster would be most beneficial to all involved as well as to the economy.

Thanks for the feedback!
