Why I Can't Watch "House" Before Bed

Last night I dreamed that when I took Lachlan in for his dental work, they informed me that he has a rare genetic disorder that is incurable and will cause his brain to deteriorate.

(FYI, we're taking him for massive dental work on Friday, complete with sedation. For Lachlan. It's totally unfair that they don't offer sedation to the parents, as well. I bet they'd do better business if they whiffed some of that nitrous oxide into the room when it's time to pay the bill, don't you?)

But was it Hugh Laurie giving the diagnosis? and what accent was he speaking with?

I've only watched "House" once - on my last plane trip overseas. It was the one with "fetal mirror syndrome" where he kept telling the mother she should abort, and they ended up operating on the baby in the womb. I had to wonder if that was typical for the show.

Love House.

When Liam was 2.5 he had to have massive dental work under general anesthesia. I was *completely* freaked. It was okay. Kids are very resilient and sedation/anesthesia is very safe for healthy people. I totally get the stress, but take a deep breath. It will be fine.

Unfortunately, no.

I didn't see that episode, so I couldn't tell you. Which part were you wondering about being typical?

We were recently presented with a bill for more than 500 dollars for a tooth extraction involving an oral surgeon, trauma for our daughter and loss of sleep for a few nights.

It just have what I would have considered the "typical" Hollywood reaction to a pregnancy going bad.
Okay, here's the synopsis. With a little digging, I found the name and some other stuff online.

SPOILERS

Title: Fetal Position
Summary: Mother shows unusal symptoms, eventually leading to a diagnoses of "maternal mirror syndrome". When they can't find the real cause, House recommends aborting since the fetus is going to kill the mother. She refuses - I think I remember that she thinks she's old enough that she thinks she'll never have another child. House almost aborts without her consent when things go bad, but another doctor intervenes. House keeps it very impersonal, always calling it "the fetus". They keep digging, eventually resorting to draing the amniotic fluid, and operating on the child. In the most dramatic moment, just as House is going on again about "the fetus", the child reaches out of the womb and grabs his finger. It stuns him into silence. They finish the operation, put the amniotic fluid back, the child is born healthy, everyone is happy, etc. etc.

So, what surprised me was that they didn't take the easy out of 1) making the mom a religious nut who didn't want an abortion and 2) they didn't do it anyway.

I haven't watched it much - though it typically gets good reviews. I just don't like medical dramas as a general rule. I was on a 13-hour flight, though :)
