Connor Math Work 2007/11/26
Connor has finally gotten the first chapter of Dolciani pre-algebra, on expressions, equations, precedence, inverse operations, properties of expressions and so forth. So the next step is chapter 2, which is negative numbers, exponents, absolute values and scientific notation. Connor has done all of this except possibly scientific notation, so I'm first going to give him the chapter review (p. 78), and if he gets that all right, the chapter test. If he gets those almost completely, I'll fill in the gaps where he has a problem; otherwise, I'll move on to chapter 3, which covers rational numbers.

My oldest moved through pre algebra and algebra 1 pretty well and fast. At the begining of the year we started algebra 2 and he flopped. I was told I need to give him geometry before the 2. Well, I'll have to wait till Income tax to buy so, for now we are going back over algebra 1 to make sure he knows it. Good luck!

I'm still struggling a bit about where to put geometry. I would like to put Connor through a rigorous course, based on Euclid, but I fear that his personality would not suit that well. That is, I don't know that he has the patience for extended proofs. But I need to figure out how to get him to do proofs and think visually. Right now I'm thinking that between pre-algebra and algebra, I'll take him through a simplified geometry program that works on construction and logic, with short proofs; then after algebra I do a more comprehensive course of geometry before algebra II. That way, he'd get the early exposure to different ways of thinking, but a more thorough exposure to proofs and more advanced higher-level thinking right before he'd need them to understand algebra.
