Midyear Check

I've updated The Plan with notes about where we are and what we've actually done, as opposed to what I had planned.

A note about The Plan. I wrote it up. It's my guideline. But I actually look at the thing maybe twice a year. It was good to work out a guideline for reaching certain goals, but in reality I work with where we are, who we are, and what we want on a more immediate basis. Goals are necessary and plans are good, but we don't homeschool so that we can get bent out of shape trying to follow some curriculum to the letter.

I'm an academic overachiever. One of the most important lessons I've learned on this homeschooling journey is that it's better to underplan than to overplan. Consequently I'm pretty darned pleased that we're ahead of where I thought we'd be in some areas. That tells me I'm doing this planning thing right, so far: We've worked, but we haven't stressed. We took plenty of time off, and had plenty of fun along the way.

We're off to our last day of co-op classes, where I'll get to view Connor and Aidan's clay animation video: "The Gingerbread Man Gone Wrong." I'll see if I can post a clip later.

Well, I'm feeling better. We're approaching our end of year and we're about halfway through LBO. I kept thinking that perhaps we were going way too slow, so it's nice to hear that someone else is going at about the same pace. That's the problem with using a book like this: I don't know what a "normal" pace for a child this age is. :}

I figure it might take us two years to get through the first book, and that's fine. Connor has a tendency to want to move quickly, but without *really* learning the grammar. So sometimes we have to stop and backtrack. He likes the book, though, and will actually tell you that he likes Latin, and that it's not hard. And that is pretty cool :)

So if you're halfway through LBO, you ROCK!

"About" halfway. :) We're having focusing problems around here, *for me*, not the boys. But we're close enough that I'll call it good even if we're not quite there at the end of the month.

I haven't forgotten about posting our reading list, btw. I should have it up tomorrow or the next day. Did I mention that I'm having trouble focusing? :}

A-HA!! I *knew* that book sounded familiar - and what did I find as I unpacked (yet more) boxes today? Latin Book One! I actually have a copy. I have no idea why that tickled the snot out of me, but it did. :-)
