Down to Eight

I was rooting for them to vote the other way on this, but it looks like we're down to eight planets.

The new definition of a planet makes sense (must orbit the primary, must have enough mass to be spherical, must clear its orbit), and probably preserves a lot of sensibilities. I bet the astrologers are bummed, though. Does this mean I don't have to worry about Pluto transiting my Sun on my Descendant?

Update The full text of the resolution can be found here. But ... but I have questions! Quick, where's an astronomer? Mainly ... hasn't Pluto cleared its orbit? Or are they only disqualifying it because it crosses Neptune's orbit?

My sons have informed me that they are still going to call Pluto a planet. I don't really have a problem with the new definition, but I'm kind of considering Pluto the exception to the rule.

At least they didn't go the other way and include every little bit of space dust floating around...

Frankly, the whole thing depresses me. What it comes down to is what did Mary's very eager mother just serve us, if not pizzas? I mean she can't just serve us NINE. That's ludicrous. And it's bad enough that astronomers have been making me say your anus since I was five. And why can't we rename Neptune Pluto so that the ending mnemonic noun can stay with us? Mary's very eager mother just served us pizzas. Or rename Uranus Pluto? Mary's Very Eager Mother just served Pizza, Nerd. Actually, I think from now on when speaking of your anus, I may just say Pluto. How does Pluto feel about that?

But Catherine, I'm a little concerned about you speaking of my anus, not to mention giving it pet names.

Rich *is* coming back soon, right? ;-)

Earlier on one of the boards they were trying to come up with new mnemonics. There was a mis-read by one poster which resulted in My Very Earnest Mother Just Sexed Up Ned.

Perhaps not one to teach the kids, but you're not going to have any trouble remembering, now, are you?

Rich should be home in LESS THAN ONE MONTH. Today is Rhiannon's birthday and yesterday was one month left to it's my first time uttering that. You know, you should not be concerned with me talking about your anus, there is a whole e-group with that as the primary topic, hasn't anyone told you? Lynxanus, I think. LOL

Ok so all I have to say is that there was no reason to bring Ned into this. I was doing just fine with Mary's Very Eager Mother Just Sexed Up Nine Perverts.

Ok, you two have a bit to much free time to be thinking up that kind of stuff... or prehaps my brain is just too slow (all the party getting ready for and subsequent drinking all day and recovery...) to have even considered changing the mnemonic. sigh...

My older two are sad that they don't get to memorize 3 new planets. Instead they have to forget one. They even think it's sad.

You guys need to stop anthropomorphizing the planets: they hate that.
