Packing Bites

Packing is evil.

The problem is that we're taking this packing opportunity to create a household inventory. So that means we're not just plunking stuff in boxes, we're creating a database in which we list everything we pack.

That. Takes. Forever.

It takes at least an hour to pack a box of books. Ask me why I didn't just dump them all in and label the box "paperbacks"? Ask me why I didn't do that, and then drive the box to the dump?

I don't know.

Tonight I packed a box of curricula I'm not currently using. I estimate the value of the box to be $450. And there will be plenty more where that came from.

I am pruning as we go along, but it doesn't seem like much. I'm trimming, and we probably need to lop off huge branches, or just pull out the hedges altogether.

At any rate, we are moving s l o w l y, and we really don't have all that much time. Our move target is the first week in April. We have no house to move into, this house is not ready to show for sale ...

But it will all work out, right?

Yes, it will all work out.

I have often found that I *prune,* *trim,* get rid of, all the excess stuff at both ends of the move. First, while I'm packing up the old space, I come across the things I can't believe we still have and out it all goes. Then, once in the new space, as I'm unpacking, I realize that I don't want some of that stuff to be in the new place - out it goes. So I end up making at least 2 trips to Goodwill.

I also find it easier to get rid of stuff when I'm the only one around. Esp books. I LOVE books as does the 13 or so LARGE book cases that are all overfull prove. Yet, a few years back, I was able to box up approx 2 shelves worth of books that will never be read again. I had to do it w/o Mike around though. They were all my college books (NOT the classic works, but the techi stuff that's mostly out of date).

I had a friend help me though. She said, "why keep the things? The memories are not in them but in you." With that thought in mind I was able to be rid of sooooo much stuff and it felt GOOD!

Lastly, Mike is the cataloger. I want him to at least catalog the big items - TVs, DVD players, pcs, laptops, etc...but no. He bought a service or something that catalogs ALL our books and music. It tells him the location of the item in the house, summarizes it, gives a picture of it and a link to amazon (I think). Its a great program!

I'm never telling Zorak about that program. He'll spend the next ten years cataloguing everything we own - including the children! Ack! (Though it does sound nifty, and probably awesome for insurance purposes!)

Steph, it will be okay. It'll all come together, and if the neighbors wonder at the large bonfire in the yard just before you move, invite them over for a farewell bbq or something. They don't have to know you're torching the stuff you didn't want to sort through!

Oh yes, it will work out. You're forgetting the law of Newtonian moving which states that as you get closer to the date of the move, you start caring less and less about your belongings. Soon, things which you treasured and fussed over, will be summarily dumped in a black garbage bag and hauled to the local charities & you'll be SO glad, because all you'll be thinking is "YES! One less thing to pack!!"

So, did you have a night last month when the two of you got drunk and tried to find the hardest way *ever* to pack? lol

I've moved to often to even contemplate doing it your way.

Believe me, you will be so glad you took the time for an inventory. We closed on this place sometime back in October, and just today I located a box of books I have been searching high and low for. (An unmarked box shoved up high on a shelf that nearly knocked me flat when it came down.) So at least if you decide to live out of boxes for a while, like we are, you'll know which boxes.

Now that we're somewhat settled in, though for how long nobody knows, I am finally getting around to the serious pruning, dumping stuff on TWTM swap boards.

April's still a long way off...

Believe me, that is NOT the kind of scheme we come up with when we're really drunk.

I follow hornblower's except on the opposite end of the move. When I'm unpacking, that's when I stop caring about my belongings and start tossing them into the out-of-my-house box. It's the one less thing I have to find a place for attitude.
