Conversations Heard Only at Our House

(I held up a flash card for Connor, on which was written the Latin word "fenestra." "Fenestra" is the word for "window," but Connor was stumped and couldn't remember it.)

Connor: I don't know. Give me a hint.

Me: The Thirty Years' War.

Connor: Oh! Window!

And then we started singing a Trout Fishing in America song.

Do any of you have any idea what happened here? Or have we left you all in the dark?

Makes perfect sense to ME...

Defenestration! Neither of us knew that word until we learned fenestra. And neither of us ever forgets fenestra because we thought defenestration was such a fun word. :)

I was absolutely clueless, but it's amazing what you can find out when you google "Thirty Years' War + window." :D

Scarily obvious...as soon as I read the word fenestra I thought of the 30YW. And now I'm off to dance the Nursery Rhyme Polka.

I was going to respond, but I pulled out the Trout Fishing in America lyrics, and threw them out the window, the window, the window....

Now tell me the public school that could have produced that bit of knowledge in Connor!

So are you going to EXPLAIN YOURSELF for those (me) who are sufficiently clueless?

One of my favorite words - fenestration. I had a studio apt with a fenestration in a wall (thus making it a studio apt and not a one bedroom). Great word!

I don't know a thing about the Thirty Year's War, but my first thought was "defenestration". And that scene in "Die Hard" when Hans says, "Shoot the window" only in German, and German for window is "fenster".

Jo, here you go.

And here's the Trout Fishing in America tie-in. (These lyrics are to the album version of the song, but really, you need to hear it live. Live, they work in "Stairway to Heaven.")
