Conversations with a Four Year Old

Griffin: I didn't see the red thing.

Me: What red thing?

Griffin: The red thing i didn't see.

(Ah, of course.)

Tonight he was asking questions about molecules (science post forthcoming). I told him that he is made of molecules. He asked me: "Did the molecules decide to make me themselves?"

All I could do, at first, was laugh. What a question! What a profound, fantastic, wonderful question!

Unfortunately, the rest of the kids chose that moment to pounce upon us and play. (And that's unfortunate only in that I didn't get to finish the conversation with Griffin.)

I will never tire of hearing how they think the world works.

Ah...four year olds. I love this age. I have a 4yo, and the questions make me laugh...and think. The age varies, I know, from kid to kid, but this time of 'waking up' to the wide world is *sooo* neat. Instead of just sitting passively, while we go somewhere, she's asking about the lines on the road, rules of driving, why do people have cars in the first place, and do people drive at night, too? She's given us *advice* on our driving almost from the beginning, though, so that's not really new, lol. ;o)

He and James should get together to try to "weigh" molecules! Lately I get questions along those lines, and when Zorak comes in the door, I'm drooling and whimpering, "I don't know how many molecules there are in my right arm... I... just... don't... know... *sob*" I love the questions. I just wish I had more of the answers. Thankfully, he's added Chemist to his list of future jobs.

And yes, you know, even when I *do* know the answers, I don't mind a good, old fashioned, boy pouncing session. Those are good for the heart, body and mind!

Wow, did Griffin hit a time-warp and I missed it? When did his mind start thinking in a way to ask such a question? Do you have a budding philosopher? And why do your kids keep growing up anyway?
