Not bad, considering.
The bread never rose.
Usually Jeff takes the kids door to door while I stay home and hand out candy. This year I took them out. That is so much more fun! Nearly everyone on our street was handing out candy, a marked contrast to last year. Very few kids were out, so one trip up and down the street was all it took to get huge amounts of sugar. Poor Connor went home earlier than his brothers, and was asleep by 9 pm - without washing his hair first, so there is black powdery hairspray residue everywhere and on everyone. Poor kid.
The Lightyear Twins and costumeless Aidan check out their loot.
See those sugar skulls on the table? Those were fun to make. Pure sugar. I am pleased to say that no one ate them. Aidan tried one, and immediately decided that was too much sugar for him. Wise kids.
I'm trying to convince the kids to send their leftover candy to the soldiers in Iraq. They think I'm joking.
Posted by Steph at November 1, 2004 08:45 AMOur neighborhood was dead again this year (I guess that's a bad pun for Halloween). About 30 kids at our door, and only about 1 in 3 houses had lights on for trick-or-treaters.
Churches and malls are slowly killing neighborhood trick-or-treating.
Posted by: Mark L on November 1, 2004 10:24 AMWe discovered an unexpected perk to living in a townhouse community! Trick or Treating is beautifully efficient! 15 minutes and their buckets were filled to the brims. Very cool. Daddy has taken them the past two years b/c I have been in desperate need of first aid and a stiff drink after the marathon-last-minute-costume-creation sprees. *sigh* Next year we all go as mimes and I'm taking a bucket!
Love the ofrenda picture... but of all the photos you've posted, a certain family member has been suspiciously missing... you need to get on the other end o' the lens, my dear!
Happiest of Days!

I loved the ofrenda!
Your boys are adorable - loved the Buzz outfits. After 2 solid years of zipping on and off J's Buzz outfit for pretend play, we're sort of creeping out of that stage and onto Tony Hawk now. I'm afraid the bandaids will be for real - and not pretend if J does start to really learn some skateboard moves...
Posted by: Concierge on November 1, 2004 09:10 PMWe couldn't do the neighborhood thing this year cause DH was in the doc's office ;-). So we did the mall thing on Thursday (why they didn't do it on Halloween is beyond me). None of us was sure about going this way. But once done...WOW! It was great! All the candy was safe, having been provided by mall management. No weather concerns. Easy access to potties when needed. And when we were all done, we went straight to a resturant for a meal...the last real meal they got in the following 24 hours! We just might do it that way again next year.
Ok, educate me please. What is ofrenda?
Thank you for the link to the Cookies for Soldier thing. I'm gonna propose that the LLL group I do cookie exchange with annually participate.
Posted by: Diane on November 2, 2004 12:36 AMConcierge, my two little ones have lived in their Buzz costumes for months, and still are. We own three of them, and I'm thinking of buying a couple more. I made the mistake of letting them paint while wearing them, so they're not looking so good any more.
Diane, an ofrenda is a Mexican altar for Days of the Dead. They traditionally include sugar skulls to represent the dearly departed, lots of skeleton images, paper flowers, marigolds, copal incense, a cup of water for the dead, and rememberance offerings.
And you're making Mark and myself cry. We want Halloween to stay a fun door-to-door thing, and here you are defecting to the warm mall .
