Homeschooling in Texas/Free Curriculum

J. Hall left a comment on a previous post about homeschooling in Texas. She wanted to know if I knew of any support groups in the Fort Bend area, and if I know of any free curricula online.

I don't even know where Fort Bend is, but a Google search turned up Learning Adventures Fort Bend. That looks like a good place to start. And here's a Houston-area group that says it has members in Fort Bend.

As far as free curricula goes, my favorite one is Ambleside Online. This is a Charlotte Mason-style curriculum that is easily adaptable to your family and situation. It uses many books that are freely available online, as well.

Since you're in Texas, you can look up the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. This will give you a year-by-year breakdown of what the public schools expect kids to learn at each grade level for each subject. You can just follow this as a list of what to teach, although the educationalese is a bit difficult to wade through at points.

You might check your local library for the book "Homeschool Your Child for Free".

One resource we use all the time is Enchanted Learning.

I'm hoping that others who read this blog will chime in with their favorite free curricula resources.

I hope this helps. Please ask away if you have questions about homeschooling in Texas, or about getting started in general.

There are a lot of links to pages with a whole year's worth of spelling words on them on this page:
